Continuous Professional Development for Visiting Music Teachers

with Michael Harrison

Michael Harrison Ski Instructor

In my two-pronged career as an elite sports coach and professional musician, I am often struck by the disparity of approach in the teaching and training trajectory of the two disciplines of sport and music.

For students learning techniques and skills to play sport, and for professional athletes qualifying to become sports coaches, the training systems are regulated, structured, methodical and proven.

I am convinced that instrumental music teachers can learn from the world of sports coaching.

"Thank you for an inspirational couple of hours - it was a really thought-provoking session and I know everyone took away a huge amount from it. The parallels you draw between music and sport are so interesting and hugely relevant to music teaching."
Laetitia Stott, Head of Brass
Highgate School London

With over thirty years’ experience of performing and teaching music at an international level, and as a sports coach with the highest-level qualification, I am uniquely positioned to compare, evaluate and share observations about how sports coaching approaches can inform instrumental teaching style
